Can you whitewash volcanic rock?

We have a fireplace made out of volcanic rock and we hate it!

It can't hurt! If you hate it, experiment. You have nothing to lose. P.S. - I bet it not only will look great, but will change the look of the room entirely! (But test on a small patch first to make sure you have the consistency right) -

Those 70s fireplaces usually have that stuff stuck on over a wire mesh. You can remove it, and do whatever you like to the surface. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOYJa1nFLtY![]()

Yes, you can. Other ideas would be to cover it with a façade of wood, or even another layer of brick or stone of your choosing. -
