It can't hurt! If you hate it, experiment. You have nothing to lose. P.S. - I bet it not only will look great, but will change the look of the room entirely! (But test on a small patch first to make sure you have the consistency right)

Yes, you can. Other ideas would be to cover it with a façade of wood, or even another layer of brick or stone of your choosing.
