Is it the silver that is black? For that you need silver polish. I prefer the paste type in a small jar. Be certain you don't rub or scrub the silver with the polish! If the finish is merely silver over another metal you can easily rub through the silver layer. Best to go slowly and keep checking. Plus, a little bit of tarnish in any parts that are ornate make it even more authentic!

If the cast iron is black, scrub with Kosher salt and reseason it.

I think it may be heavy duty aluminum.....my mom always said cast iron and I never questioned it....I’ve used it for years and it just literally overnight turned black. Thanks for your help.

Hi. It's the hot moisture that's turned your silver coated cast iron. If silver polish is bringing up the shine you can try dry baking soda and the slightest amount of water to make a paste. Let it sit for at least an hour. Wipe clean, then use dry baking soda, cover and let sit overnight. If there's no progress, you may need to have it re-silvered. Going forward make sure the glass liner is removed and the silver is completely air-dried before storing. Good luck.

I've never heard of "silver" cast iron, sorry. Regular cast iron can be cleaned with a "SOS" pad and hot soapy water. Dry very well, immediately.

Coat with a light layer of vegetable shortening and bake in a 375 degree oven for 1 hour, upside down (line the oven bottom with aluminum foil), let cool down slowly. Iron rusts.

It may be heavy duty aluminum...my mom always said cast iron....that’s why I added it wasn’t a skillet. Thanks for your answer.

It is probably not cast iron;cast iron is black unless coated with ceramic.Since it's silver colored it's most likely made of heavy duty aluminum that is why it turned black/dark from oxidation, I use use Comet cleanser and green scrubber sponge then a little Dawn dish soap. Do not put Aluminum in diashwasher it will oxidize/turn black, also turns black/dark from boiling water in them.

This makes sense to me...I imagine it’s heavy duty aluminum..I have cooked in this pot for years and it (turned black) happened all of a sudden but it may have been after putting it in the dishwasher...I think I may have done that..I usually don’t cause it’s too big. I’ll try your remedy...hoping it works. I wasn’t sure it was safe to use and I miss it!

I think you’re probably right about time to retire it but man it’s a mean chili pot...hate to give it up...it’s been extensively used for 70 years...which is why I didn’t know what I’d done different to turn it black.
