musty comes from damp areas. ya gotta find them. water or moisture is at a cooler temp -usually- than the surrounding areas. there are scanners made to find wet spots/ cool spots, air leaks. see if your local home improvement or lumber yard will lend/ rent you one.

This is the address for a site I recently signed up to. It has several problems and how to fix. Musty smells is one of them. You need to check for leaks because that's the main cause of musty odors. If not fixed it can lead to rot which brings termites and carpenter ants.
Once you pinpoint and eliminate the musty smell, if you have ceiling fans, keep them going to ensure air circulation and keep the smell from coming back.
I had the same problem and it all happened when I was trying to sell my house. I finally discovered that my old washing machine was not emptying all the water after a load and water was caught in the workings. I ended up never closing the washer lid so the moisture could dry up, which it did
dry fry some fresh coffee grains. Place bowls of it in area. Smells like fresh brewed coffee.
Place sodium sulphate flakes in a household strainer. Place the strainer on a bowl to receive the water. The sodium sulphate will catch water from the environment killing fungi that cause the smell. After a couple of weeks it will have shrunk and you see drained water in the bowl. Keep children and pets away . It is poison
Another option, use silica gel, same procedure.
Try BICARB SODA in a lid with a few drops of lavender oil place where smell is prominent. You may have a mould problem ,rising damp. Would b a good idea to check it out as this can cause health issues .Especially if anyone in your home has breathing problems.
