Do you have dogs or cats? Is your carpet clean? Sometimes older homes just get a musty smell that's actually coming from the wood in the house. Doors, moldings sand baseboards. Try using a tart burner. They make some wonderful fragrances.

If your house smells musty it is likely due to dampness. Basements with concrete walls may need to be sealed, if no basement make sure there is good air circulation in crawl space and if you live in an area with high humidity invest in a dehumidifier. Hope this helps.

"Old house smell" could be a symptom of mildew and mold within the walls, so you'll need to identify the source areas before tackling this issue (mold versus the inherent smells of a very well lived-in dwelling). One product you might want to give a try is called Room Shocker, which is advertised as an odor-busting solution which uses chlorine dioxide fumes to penetrate through walls and remove any severe odor from various sources such as cigarette and cigar smoke, pet urine, vomit, soured milk, mold, mildew and bacteria etc. It will also decontaminate treated areas of harmful pathogens, spores and fungi that might also reside inside old walls (we hope this is not the case!).

Open the windows when the weather is nice to air it out, I also turn on a couple fans, I also have a negative ion generator that removes dust, pollens and molds,, make sure your vacuuming your upholstry once in awhile, and washing drapes to remove dust from the home, Musty can also indicate moisture, be sure there are no leaks, and if it persists, get a dehumidifier.

All of the above are really thorough recommendations. Some other areas to investigate for moisture or mold include a sump pump, an unused bathroom, an uncapped chimney, humidifier, plant water in saucers or even the collection tray under the refrigerator.
