There are cleansers made for metals and they will work for copper, too.
You rub on with a soft cloth and let dry then buff. For the spots you may need to do this several times.
After clear coat with old fashioned car wax. The kind you rub on and buff off. That will prevent further tarnishing.

I've used ketchup on my copper bottom pots/pans (Revereware) with great success! Google using ketchup to clean copper.
