Usually it's a thin coating of brass or copper. You can use a brass cleaner to clean up as much as possible. I'd recommend cleaning then spraying with a spray paint rated for high heat. Good luck.
Use ketchup. Yep...works on copper and brass.

Sand them down and spray paint them with matte black stove paint. They will look great and won't look so dated.
Use a magic cleaning sponge.
Bar keepers friend in liquid. I just used it to clean very tarnished sleigh bells. It doesn't scratch the surface.
Plain white toothpaste
First remove the surface dirt with water and a ball of steel wool. Once dry make a paste up of either with lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda, or with lemon juice and salt. Or make a paste of equal parts of salt, flour and white vinegar, rub over the object, wait an hour or so until it has hardened and dried, then rinse off. Another method is to boil it in a solution of equal parts water, vinegar and salt.
Only when most of the corrosion has been removed can you polish with a metal polish such as Brasso, and afterwards protect it with microcrystalline wax
Brasso cleaner. We used it on all the fire poles when I was a firefighter.
This is random but I just bought a house with the same stove and cannot find out what brand it is do you know by chance
This is a BIS Fireplace
We have a wood stove also and I plan to paint the cheap looking gold trim matte black to match the stove itself. Of course I plan to use a high temp paint.
