You are better off replacing it. They have really inexpensive carpet tiles now that you can do yourself.

I agree except , I only plan on living here for another 2 yrs and this is an apartment rental.

  • If fixing a unit for rental, rip out and replace - 14 years is way past life expectancy. If living in the unit, call in the pros, not that expensive.

    • Absolutely! When I was single and living in apartments, I had my carpets cleaned at least once a year at my expense (and sent any drapes out for cleaning too), as it is not that expensive. Especially at this time of year, the capet and upholstery places start running specials for the holidays. They run advertisements on tv and run ads in local newspapers too, so maybe you might start looking for them. Pull out the yellow pages or Google to find local carpet cleaners and they can sometimes give you a ballpark quote over the phone. Local independent companies may even be cheaper than the national ones like Coit and Stanley Steemer. Nothing like walking barefoot on clean carpet! I have mine done every 3 months, but I have a lot of pets now and live in a dusty area.

If you're the one living in the unit, I'd get a shampooer from any grocery store and first clean with hot water and vinegar. Then use shampoo and finish up with another bath of hot water and vinegar.

I have not tried hot water and vinegar. I will definitely look into this idea.

If it is worth salvaging, rent a Rug Doctor machine (our Dollar General has them). Using the Rug Doctor cleaner, you may get the carpet looking like new!

Thank you for you comment. My brother used a carpet cleaner, not sure if it was a Rug Doctor. It is worth a try especially with all the new ideas, I have received on this forum.
