How to clean conch shells?

I have an old conch shell that was in my childhood home for years. After recently reclaiming it, I have noticed it has what appears to be black "mildew" spots on it. I don't want to apply anything that might damage it, does anyone have an idea as to how to clean it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Connie. I have used Simple Green (biodegradable) on my patio deck to release the mildew so I can hose it off. It works well and won't harm my grass or plants around it. I don't like using bleach. Spray it on and wait ten minutes and then scrub lightly with a soft rag and it should come off :)
  • If the stain ends up into the shell, a little bleach will remove the color and lighten up the dark spot. Use a tooth brush and some toothpaste and simply scrub it clean. rinse well with water and dry.

A soak in oxyclean and then a light scrub with a toothbrush or magic eraser might take it off. Or make a paste with oxyclean. I use it for everything.
