But use a soft cloth to apply and rub the silverware so you don't scratch the playing off. 😇

Because the silver is plated, there is only a layer of silver over another metal. You need to use something that is not abrasive like a cleanser so you remove as little of the silver as possible. I use Wright's Silver Polish.

You do not want to use any abrasives as suggested by lau62 on your silverplate. There are silver polishes available that will gently remove the tarnish and not harm the plating. Do not wash silverplate or silver in a dishwasher. They should be hand washed only. I don't even like Tarnx. I used Cape Cod Metal polishing cloth after washing and drying my silverware in a mild detergent and hot water. It's a little expensive but convenient. Here are two polishes that are great: https://www.blitzinc.com/products/silver-shine-polish and http://www.hermansilver.com/care.htm Herman's makes their own silver polish.

These are many ways to clean your silver, try one of these:

    No more tarnishing with aluminum

Boil 4 cups of water, a tablespoon of baking soda, and some aluminum foil. Place silverware in for 10 seconds then remove with kitchen tongs.

    Ketchup isn’t just for eating

Tarnished silver can be polished with ketchup using a paper towel – for silver that has crevices, use a toothbrush.

Kill two birds with one stone

When using Windex to clean your windows, spray some on a rag and use it to scrub your silver.

    Brush your silver with toothpaste

Use circular motions to brush non-gel and non-abrasive toothpaste onto silver. Leave on for five minutes before washing off with water.

    Use soda for tarnished silver

Fill a plastic bowl with lemon-lime soda and place slightly tarnished silver in it for one hour. Rinse and dry with a paper towel.
