If the pits penetrate the enamel there is not much hope in getting or keeping it clean. Having the tub refinished by a pro...may be a great alternative for you. http://www.miraclemethod.com/

i inherited a tub that was in sad shape because i am in an apartment, there isn't much i can do....the two things i found that work the best was either steam cleaning or filling the tub with hot water, add some baking soda and white vinegar and let it soak over night....next morning the tub looks brand new!! the downside is that i have to do that about once a month and in between just sprinkle with baking soda and scrub....good luck...
