Remove decal from ceramic tile
-
Carol S on Jan 05, 2014Two things I can suggest off the top of my head cover the ugly with a solid pic., decal a design you like. Getting the print off the tile will be awkward, if you have to do it on the door. I'd try dry steel wool first or paint remover on a rag. Taking the tile off - depends on how it was affixed to the door. Use a flash light and see if they use double faced tape or glue. If you want to try to remove it, use something with a wide edge (putty knife or larger) Tape it on all sides with a small hammer. You may get lucky & it will peel off. Let us know how you make out.Helpful Reply

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Jan 05, 2014Do you have a heat gun? I would try that and start about 18" away and slowly move closer until you see the decal getting wrinkly and see if it will come off with a razor blade. I would even try a hair dryer if you have a high powered one. Or try rubbing alcohol! Use cotton balls or small wadded up paper towel and keep soaking decal until it comes off. good luck!Helpful Reply

Kala Professional Restoration services on Jan 06, 2014Using a heat gun is a good idea to remove decal, but there can be a host of other ways which could be put to use to decal.Using acetone or methylated spirit is one of them.Soak the area well and then scrape off as much as you can. Razor scraper and cotton balls can also be an option.Using the razor scraper held at an angle of 45 degrees to the surface, taking care not to scratch the tile. Now rub the area with cotton balls soaked in nail polish remover or acetone.Helpful Reply

Sharyn Diaz on Jan 07, 2014If the picture was applied to the finished tile as a decal it can be scraped off with a razor however if it was applied and glazed/baked you won't be able to remove it. In that case the tile will have to be covered or pried off the door.Helpful Reply

Debbi reis on Jan 07, 2014WD-40 works great. Spray it on and let it sit then take the edge of a razor blade and it will peel right off. Can be used on ceramic, wood. I keep a can handy for removing labelsHelpful Reply

Patty Hibble on Jan 07, 2014If you don't have GooGone or WD40, try rubbing with an oil soaked cotton ball (vegetable, olive - whatever you have on-hand). All have worked for me.Helpful Reply

Pam on May 05, 2016I use low odor mineral spirits. It's a lot cheaper and works much better than the other recommended products, except vinegar which I think would evaporate too fast to do much good on your tile. Use a piece of old terry cloth because the gentle abrasive action helps get the decal off. The decal will dissolve into the fabric so rotate the spot you use as the decal dissolves. You can just throw the rag into the wash and use it again or discard. It will be flammable so dispose of it safely.Helpful Reply

Pam on May 05, 2016Oh, if you have to scrape, use a plastic putty knife to avoid digging into the tile.Helpful Reply
