sticky old linoleum flooring how can I get rid of the stickyness?

I have old linoleum flooring in my kitchen and dining area. What can I do to get rid of the sickyness? Please help! Don't have the money right now to replace it!

It sounds as though the many years of cleaning has allowed soap to build up on the surface which causes the surface to become sticky. No doubt it is difficult to keep clean also as a result. A good floor wax stripper should do the trick. Once done there are several great products available to re-gloss the surface if has become dull over age. Visit any of the big box stores or any flooring store in your area and they should be able to provide you with a refinishing kit that not only will clean but make the surface look more like new again.

You do not want to take a belt sander to this...not if you plan on having it be useful until you can replace it. Is this stickiness a widespread issue?...or in isolated spots. My first guess is in line with Woodbridge..in that is is an accumulation of cleaning residues. I would start with a bit of vinegar in some water and a good old fashioned scrub brush... it will be labor intensive but thorough. Work a small 2 sq foot area the rinse well with clear water and let it dry...once dry test for stickiness...if your good to go you can work the rest of the area. If the "work" part is tough on your hands and knees you can break it down into a few days worth.

Is it sticky from buildup for other cleaners? Try non-sudsing ammonia in a bucket of water (try on small area first) then rinse with vinegar water. If it's old wax buildup, try Holloway House Deep Cleaner...used to be called Wax Remover. Slather on the floor with a mop, let set, then wipe up, then rinse with vinegar water.

You could try the paper bag floor. Or, find out if there is something like polyurethane or varnish or even paint that would cover it. Do not do this unless you check with someone who deals in paint, porch paint or linoleum that knows it would be ok. You could try it in a closet or cabinet if that is possible. This is just an idea on my part so please do not take my word for it. There could be many reasons why it won't work so check first. I have heard of them painting tile before but you want to make sure it will permanently cover the sticky part. Please let me know if you do any of these and if they work. I am sure you will find something that will work so keep looking if none of these will do.
