Clean it with Murphy's Oil Soap and use a light application of Old English Polish. I think all woods darken some with age and the oil from our hands doesn't help keep banisters clean.
Murphy's Oil Soap is what I use.
I just purchased two oak end tables and a coffee table at an estate sale. I first cleaned it with Super Fine 0000 Steel Wool. I then used Milsek Original Lemon Oil Furniture Polish. It brought back the luster of the wood beautifully.
