I have the same issue, was told by the mfg. that you can't clean the buildup off them they have to be replaced. Hard to believe.

I was suggest calling your faucet manufacturer.
We have oil rubbed bronze door knobs and hinges and the exterior ones look awful. It is the only finish that’s not warranted by the manufacturer. Lesson learned too late!
