Most spools have a small notch on them to lock the thread into. That keeps them from unraveling.

if you just stick your fingernail in here you can kind of pop. it up and once you do that you can wrap the thread ...
I use the little round stickers, a package of 1,000 from the $1 store., keeps your loose ends in check!
Scotch tape. Keep one in the sewing basket.
There is usually a little slit in the top of the thread holder...just slide the end of your thread. This should hold it, however, if you do not find one I use a small piece of tape to hold it.
First look for slit, next try bit of masking tape (but it loses it's tackiness), finally a rubber band twice around, not pretty but effective.
use a piece of velcro
I have wrapped all my thread spools in plastic wrap. That way they neither unravel nor catch dust.
You can either lock the thread in the notch on the top of the spool. You can also anchor it with a tiny piece of painter's tape. It won't leave a goo behind on the spool.
