Deb...I would suggest yard sales, Goodwill, ministries, Dollar Trees. Hope you find what you need.
I don't have any immediate suggestions for storing paper, but did see a neat idea for storing small pieces of jewelry in a magazine the other day. They used open egg cartons! Yes, free, and very effective.
Oh yes, thrift stores! The Salvation Army nearest me has THE best donations of all sorts of furniture, etc.. you can then be more crafty and paint and or alter something for yourself! Good luck... Me, I have a lot of fabric and I put up an entire wall of shelves- the sort you have the rails on the wall... so I didn't have to have anything on the floor... and I put everything into nice see thru and labeled bins..
Dollar tree type stores have a lot of 'storage' containers .. bins, jars, etc., and you can always use empty jars from mayo, etc., that you use, coffee cans/tubs, ice cube trays, boxes that products come in -- some are very sturdy cardboard!
all of these 'repurposed' items can be painted / covered with contact paper / colored tapes to make them more attractive for permanent use ...
