Every spring, I like to create something new to use to decorate and this year decided to make some DIY yarn carrots using cardboard boxes.

Since we have an abundance of cardboard shipping boxes, I thought they would be perfect for this project.

Since the pandemic started, more families are ordering online; therefore, upcycling our cardboard boxes has been challenging.

DIY Yarn Carrots

Creating yarn carrots was so easy you will want to make a bunch.

  • Cardboard (I used a shipping box)
  • Pattern (grab your printable pattern here)
  • Yard
  • Grass bush
  • Twine
  • Hot glue and glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife
  • Pencil

Carrot Pattern and Cardboard

After I printed out my pattern, I cut it out, then I placed it on my cardboard and traced around the pattern using a pencil.

Trace pattern

Using a craft knife and a cutting mat, I removed the pencil traced area to make it easier to cut.

Next, I used a craft knife on a cutting mat to cut out the designs.

Carrot Yarn Wrapping

To begin wrapping the yarn around the cardboard cutouts, I found it easiest to start at the point. First, I glued the yarn about 1/4″ down from the point on the backside’s center to hide the yarn’s cut end. Then, I started spirling the yarn around the center point at the tip of the cardboard add a tiny dot of glue in a few places to hold the yarn in place.

Next, I continued wrapping the yarn until I reached the large end, and I spiraled the yarn to cover the end and cut off the extra yarn.

Green Carrot Top

Then to create the green carrot top, I used pieces of a grass bush (floral) that I cut into pieces then glued on the backside of the large end.

Twine

I added a simple twine bow on the front side just below the top of the carrot.

You can use these carrots to decorate in various ways. For example, I used some to make a garland and others to decorate a chalkboard. The possibilities are endless.

I used some DIY yarn carrots to make this adorable chalkboard sign. You can grab the template for this sign in this printout.
