Hmmmm... suggestion would be a small plant in plain or painted terra cotta pot...wrapped in a coordinated color ribbon. Weave a wooden skewer through a hand written name tag and stand the skewer in the pot where each person will sit.
Always a tough one! Here are a few links for you to check out!

How about gold-plated wish bones? Makes for good conversation pieces.
My daughter used lucky bamboo plants, purchased by mail order, and put them in a small glass candleholder with colored pebbles.
Formal, huh? A small item that can be used by the recipient at home on a desktop or vanity table, like a crystal ring or change catching dish, a crystal votive candle and holder or a boxed pen set. My second suggestion would be an edible treat in a small box or bag with candy, petit fours, fancy nuts, or dried fruits. Wish I were invited! Have fun!
there must be a reason or an occasion for the party, right? So have the favor reflect the reason. Supposing it is someone's birthday, maybe a picture of each guest with the birthday person. If the hostess or host is known for their great cooking, a small gift of food (like a small loaf of fruit bread) If it is to celebrate an achievement in the life of the host family then a reminder of whatever the person has achieved. Say a college graduation then maybe a set of coasters from the school.
