Never had any success with that. Wound up having the cats declawed. It did NOT change their personalities at all. Far less cruel then getting rid of them.
Spray bottle filled with water and as you spray them, say "NO!" Also make sure they have a log or something that they can claw instead. Add some catnip to it at first to get them to use it. DO NOT BUY RUG SCRATCH POSTS because once they have that texture as ok to scratch, they will think it is okay for all rugs to be fair game as well AND your furniture.
I have a vet that dewclaws from the top of the foot. It's much better so that the feeling of scratching cat sand isn't disturbed. Check for around for a vet that declaws from the top!
double sided sticky tape. they are usually not happy to have the stuff stuck to them.
Buy a stretchy slipcover. They are less likely to scratch it as they cant get a good grip on it.
Get them a scratching post! Or at least the cardboard box scratchers. For cats a natural thing to do. They like to stretch and sharpen claws. I have 6 and just taught them not to do this, but povided them with several other options. None of my furniture nor rugs are damaged.
Trim their nails to make them shorter and nip off the pointed tip. I cut my cats nails all the time. It good to start when they are kitttens, the longer to start they may not be happy to let you do it.
