crate training for one, most cats prefer a litter box .. has the cat been to the vet? a urinary tract infection can make cats piddle out side the box. is the cat neutered/spade? if not it might be marking its territory. some cats want an open pan, mine like a covered commode. some have a preference for a certain litter...clumping, non clumping.. but keep your litter box clean. scoop out daily. or put a liner in it, just change out the liter as needed- there are sifting liners available.

Cats actually look for the scent of decaying urine... to take as THEIR territory, and it's simple to create... add a spoonful of ammonia!

need to find out why not using it? 1. if you have more than one cat, you need two boxes, in separate locations, --always 1 more box than you have cats. 2. Many cats object to the strong fragrance of some litters -- their noses are less than 12" from it -- ours are about 5' away! 3. if it 's a kitten, it may not have the bladder/bowel control to make it to a box that is too far away in a very large home. Try using disposable boxes in multiple areas until he/she figures it out. 4. be sure the cat is HEALTHY -- urinary infections or stones HURT and the cat associates the pain with the box and will go somewhere else, then somewhere else again, and again, etc. 6. Always keep the box clean -- for one cat - scooping once a day should be sufficient, but cat's don't like using a 'dirty' box any more than we want to go to a public restroom and find the facility unclean!

^^^ Landsharkinnc nailed it! I would add that if the cat is urinating ANYWHERE else other than the box you need to find these places and use an enzyme cleaner (Natures Miracle for cat urine is one) in those places or the cat will continue to use those inappropriate places again and again.
