Wire twiist ties, like some packaged bread or produce section. Look in the floral department of any craft and hobby store.
Make or purchase whatever ribbons you want to use, secure them with floral wire where you start them and drape them around or down the tree. Make or purchase some bows and put floral wire through the back and include some bows, too.
Tie them directly on the the tree, or tie bows to matching chenille sticks and use these to twist on to the tree.
I've seen a lot of people simply tuck the wired ribbon into the tree. They start at the top and sort of bend the ribbon into a slight loop for about 5 inches or so and push the bottom part of the loop into the tree. and keep working down the tree. I hope that makes sense.
-Use the thickest, widest wired ribbon your budget can afford.
-Purchase more length than what you think you will need to cover the area you want to. -- - Keep in mind that as soon as the ribbon is twisted, folded, or curved, it will require additional length to cover from point A to B.
