I have a fake fireplace with a large opening. I put a potted artificial fern inside. I was inspired by Pinterest. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/237353842834319206/

WELL, THIS IS WHAT I DID AND EVERYONE JUST STARES AND IS FASCINATED BY HOW LOVELY IT LOOKS, GORGEOUS ACTUALLY,! BEING A CDN. AND SPENDING WINTERS IN FLA. , WE DON'T REALLY USE THE FIREPALCE FOR LOG BURNING. I PUT A ROW OF TALL ELECTRIC GLASS CANDLES AT THE BACK OF THE FIREPLACE, THE UNSEEN CORD COMES OUT A CORNER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FIREPLACE AND HOOKS INTO A HIDDEN EXTENSON. IN FRONT OF THAT I PUT A FIVE BRANCH MIKASA, - SORT-OF-A-CIRCLE-EFFECT OF WROUGHT IRON,- WITH GLASS MIKASA VOTIVE HOLDERS ON TOP, I PURCHASED THIS IN BED/BATH/BEYOND ON SALE FOR $25.00 IT HOLDS 5 LITTLE CANDLES, BATTERY OR WAX. WHEN THE BACK LIGHTS (CHANDELIER STYLE LIGHTBULBS) ARE SWITCHED ON AND THE 5 FLICKERING VOTIVES IN FRONT ARE LIT, MAGNIFICIENT, ESPECIALLY AGAINST THE BLACK FROM THE BACK FIREWALL

P.S. ALSO, LOOKING AT YOUR FIREPLACE IT IS SIMILIAR TO MINE, I PUT WHITE VASES WITH TRAILING GREENERY ON EACH SIDE OF THEYOP OF THE MANTLE ( THE 2 VASES ARE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT, BOUGHT IN Z GALLERIES, LOOK LIKE SHELLS, ABOVE THE FIREPLACE MANTLE, I PUT A LOVELY MIRROR WITH GOLD ACCENTS, THE WHOLE THING LOOKS LIKE HOUSE BEAUTIFUL BUT REALLY DIDN'T COST MUCH, GOOD LUCK!

This is a great season to get battery or electric led mini lights. You can place them in mason jar or clear or colored jars back behind greenery and flowers. Some fireplaces are drafty so you might want to cover the opening altogether. Make a wire frame that fits inside the opening or use double stick tape covering the opening thick plastic, (like they use to insulate windows) get colored tissue paper and stick glue pieces all over the plastic like stained glass, over lap a lot and you can even make a picture. Have the led twinkle lights behind it and turn them on for a lovely effect. You can sandwich the colored paper between two layers of plastic too. I have not done this but just thinking off the top of my head.
