Draw the star on a piece of paper. If you want a large star draw half of the star. If you have a friend working with medical x-rays a processed sheet would be great to trace and cut the star. That would be your stencil. If not the cardboard would probably work. Maybe put tape on the cardboard to get a clean edge.
