Here's a good vid for ice candles. As to second question about using crayons. Be sure they are wax crayons, remove the labels, and toss them in with other wax to melt.
I've seen it done using a small milk container, (like a single serving one) They stuck a wick through the bottom, taping off the hole they created to get the wick in. They filled the container with ice that had been lightly crushed, but not so small it totally compacted. Then poured the hot wax filling the container. Once the wax was hardened, the ice, now water, could be poured out. They tore off the milk carton and the candle was formed leaving lacy holes from where the ice was. It was pretty!
