Will command hooks work on your walls?
I use OOK hooks. They hold very heavy pictures and are easy to put in. They do have very small nails but the holes can be covered with a bit of paint. I know thats not exactly what you wanted to hear, but if repairing nail damage is the issue, these eliminate that problem.
I recommend Command Strips. The come in different sizes to hold different weights.
I lived in a concrete underground house. Can't use nails to hang pics, so I used velcro and clear glue. Worked great! When I moved, I easily removed velcro off the walls and touched up the walls with a small paint brush and a little matching paint.
Try using 3M products. They have picture hanger hooks and strips that dont make holes in the wall.
I would use 3M Command Strips in appropriate size for weight of picture. They can be removed without damage to walls. You won't have to worry about paintings needing to be straightened. Apso, they will not cause pictures to hang out further (as with home picture hangers) which is important in hallway.
