I want to renovate as one of my boys is moving out. They never wanted a headboard but when I redo the room, I want one tho I can't afford to spend a lot of money

If you want a proper head board that can be leant against by someone lying in bed then get some MDF or plyboard - the thicker the better and cover with wadding and fabric. You can screw this to the wall behind the bed. If you just want the appearance of a headboard you could use a shelf over the bed, a curtain rail with fabric. You could also try some second hand louvered doors behind the bed -painted and attached to the wall or painted rustic fencing, or an old door painted up - use a couple of doors upright for something different or horizontal for the usual headboard effect.

I used framed lattice that I had left over from another project. Just use painted 1X4's to frame it. Mine is screwed into wall studs. Sits above the bed about two and a half feet. I had two small (3X3X1") birdhouses from a yard sale ($2). Attached them to the corners. My spare room is in a garden theme, so fits perfectly.
  • I would check out any thrift stores or good will or yard sales for a cheap headboard to paint. Even in my area headboards are pretty cheap at $20. Building a headboard out of wood will take you time and money. I built a fabric headboard and it ran me about $$75 when I was done. So search out garage sales and thrift stores first. Good luck
