How can I waterproof a ceramic container?

This fish container is perfect for my lucky bamboo, but the bottom slowly leaks water. Does anyone have any idea how I can seal off the bottom?

You could more than likely get away with using a latex paint like UGL or even one of those spray on sealers like Flex Seal. ps - That's a really cool container! My dh would LOVE it! :)

You may not need to turn a screen door into a boat, but the spray on rubber coating, as advertised on TV actually does work. You can buy that name brand at Lowe's or the Rustoleum brand at Home Depot. It comes in Clear, White and Black and is paintable. It smells like paint for a bit, but cures dry and has no smell. Phil

Thanks...I'll check at Home Depot today...didn't know there was such a thing as a spray on sealer...Thanks! I think I got that at Old Time Pottery, I don't know if they're in PA though. Since I posted that I also wondered about clear nail polish...I'll try the sealer first! ;)

You can also melt regular paraffin was (hardware store) and pour it into the container, slosh it around so that it covers everything and then pour out the excess. I have used this with raku pottery that has a glaze that does not hold water. I am a flower arranger and holding water is important. I do the wax coating thing twice, letting the wax harden in between applications. I have tried Thompson's Water Seal and it doesn't work well for this purpose. With the type of container you have, it may be hard to get in there with a spray type arrangement.

Thank You Jopomeroy another great suggestion...there's actually an Ace Hardware closer to me than Home Depot or Lowe's so I'll check this out first!

I had good luck with some brush on Flex Seal in a can. Just applied it like paint and it has protected my concrete statues for several years now.

  • Put the bamboo in another container and put that inside this one.
