How do I antique black painted cupboards (not chalk painted)?

I have some wooden cupboards painted black, not with chalk paint. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to antique or otherwise add interest to these cupboards? They are a prominent feature so they need to have a classy or more high end look. Thanks!

  • You could distress the edges with sandpaper, add interest to the center of a door/raised panel by adding a decorative wood piece to the middle or sand & decoupage paper on it.

Without a phot it’s hard to say, but the easiest update is new pulls/hardware. They can change the whole personality of a piece. Don’t limit yourself to Lowe’s or HD. Check online, including IKEA. As I’m sure you know, carefully measure from the inside of the door, the distance between the screws that hold the pulls you now have in place; variations are endless. Mind you, you can make new holes, but then you have to fill and paint the old ones.

Yes they could be rubbed up a bit at say corners to reveal a little of whats underneath or you could add Transfers or Clings or Beading of a different colour, or Paste wallpaper on or Motif or Do a doodle and colour them in. Or stick on Mosaic mirror Tiles etc.............

  • add a colored wax, like a metallic to any grooves or seams. Even a "liming" wax will add some white highlights. that should add some depth and dimension

hobby lobby has some nice knobs and pulls. Pat catans also has a small variety of them. Good luck and post some picture when you finish!
