if it's painted white and still dark, I would recommend putting in solar tubes. they are not too expensive (about $400 installed) bring light to everything. I have had these installed in the last two homes I live in, they are wonderful.
We had a very dark hallway in our house (two actually) we repainted both and they brightened up so much!
Go with bright or white decor/accessories. Hanging mirrors can create light in an area and make it seem larger, too.
I also have a longer, dark hallway and I am going to use the idea I saw on here. Its a really great looking idea to trick you into thinking there is natural light!
Light Pipes fit in the ceiling and go through to roof to pick up daylight.
We have a stairway and long hallway upstairs. for years it was very dreary even with the light at the top. Eventually, when we redid the whole upstairs, we got high gloss white paint and painted over the dark pink that was on the walls and the ceiling. It brightened everything so much. Light bounces off the high gloss.
Use light satin paint or metallic paint to reflect light, and get LED bulbs for your light fixture to brighten the hall, you can even run rope lights up at the ceiling and hide behind a piece of wood moulding. I had many clients who paint the ceiling metallic to create as much light as possible from the light fixture.
