How do I redo this old mirrors frame??
I have a very large old "honey oak" (yuck!) framed mirror that I use over our couch in the TV room. Wanting to cover it with perhaps some rope and paint, but not certain which paint or rope would give us the weathered nautical look I'd like to achieve. It's about 3'x2.5'. Thanks all!

I want to frame some odd size pictures. Any suggestions? Too expensive to have them custom made.
I would buy heavy duty rope at a farm supply store and before you glue it, use 200 grit sandpaper to rough up the wood so it accepts the glue. They should carry the glue to use as well.
Hey Sally Jo - I'll toss out a couple of ideas here -- if the frame is fairly plain and not too ornate for a crisp / non-beachy look, I'd use navy blue paint and white rope ...
if you want a more tropical look, a turquoise blue and a natural color rope -
and since you want a 'weathered' look -- I'd paint with a gray base and glaze or dry brush with a combination of brown/black/darker grey paints -- and use a 'OLD' rope -- which you can achieve by soaking a new rope in very very strong coffee or a thinned out brown/grey paint until it gets the color you want ... use cork floats for accents on the corners ... you can get them on Amazon I'm sure!
Hi Sally-Jo. So that the mirror doesn't end up looking more western than nautical, use a driftwood stain on the mirror.
- Lightly sand so that the new stain has something to grip onto, then stain.
- Use white cotton rope (bought on line or at most big box stores). - Glue the rope around the outside front edge.
- Use small tack nails to secure until dry. Depending on the width of the front edge (your pix didn't populate) one run around may be enough. If not, wrap again.
- Then attach cleats on both sides of the mirror. Use another piece of white rope, secure to cleats with nautical knot and hang from the rope. Done!
