You can just use construction adhesive like liquid nails and glue direct. I'd use the glue for exterior use as well as your grout.
It would probably be easier to use broker crockery (esp cups) as they would have a rounded back. I just use Elmer's glue for this kind of project and then use grout to finish it off. Here are some examples. The shoes have had the grout knocked off them. The figure has not yet been grouted.
Just make sure the clay pots are clean and dry and you should be good to go. There are also lots of tutorials here:
