Robin I so get where you're coming from in worrying about your dear hubby getting injured. Though when you think of all they've done in their life without getting injured it's still our job to worry about them. My hubby once shot a framing nail right through his finger just missing his knuckle. He's fine and once we got home from the emergency room he went back to work. With that in mind, I'd go with the knocker, but then again you can get injured just using a power screw driver. I recently about put a Phillips head through my index finger while removing screws from something. Even without the possibility of injury I do feel your door is gorgeous just the way it is.

I am also thinking with my winter heart. You would hate to violate the integrity of the door as far as energy conservation goes.

I love your door, its dramatic and speaks very loudly as it is. IMO, a speakeasy would take away from the beauty of the arch. A door knocker, on the other hand would draw your eye to the center and allow your eyes to catch to the entire arch, door and windows together, as a complete piece. I totally vote for the door knocker!!!! :)

I like the idea of a door knocker. Would not do the speakeasy because your door is too pretty as it is. Love it.

1st, what is the architectural style of your home? A door should look as if it has been part of the home since it was built.
  • Linda Linda on Jun 28, 2013
This door is gorgeous! I did read the post about your husband designing and building it. What a craftsman! I vote for a doorknocker. Not a round one, but something elongated and substantial.
  • 173371 173371 on Jun 28, 2013
I love the door. How about a speakeasy with an arch, to blend in with the existing lines?
  • Elise Deno Elise Deno on Jun 28, 2013
I vote for the door knocker. It's a beautiful door!!
  • Linda Linda on Jun 28, 2013
Me too, a larger door knocker, something really substantial. The door is gorgeous!

Your door is a work of art and a labor of love. To add a door knocker or a speakeasy would hurt its beauty. Perhaps hanging an antique brass bell to the right on the wall or from the eave would be an alternative.
  • Frankie Laney Frankie Laney on Jun 28, 2013
I agree with William Heistand, any addition would be too much and take away from the beautiful work of art your husband created. It's gorgeous as is.
  • Barb h Barb h on Jun 28, 2013
I think I would not do anything to the door. I agree with William also. Or how about a speakeasy next to the door.
  • Carol L Carol L on Jun 29, 2013
I have to agree with William. The door is gorgeous as is.
  • Carol Carol on Jun 29, 2013
In my opinion, that door is exquisite and I think you should have thought about that when your husband was building this beautiful door, he could have made it for you. How about a door bell, or something other then re-designing the door. If you must a door knocker, but please make it as exquisite as the door. Great craftsmanship.

Help answer this question...Either would look nice, but I like the Speak easy idea.....
  • 153091 153091 on Jun 29, 2013
Should you decide on speakeasy.. if you arch the top like your door..ok...don't believe the straight look would compliment the door top arch. I also like the knocker idea however I would check out a different look. Take a picture of your door, look through catalogs of different door knockers...cut them out and place on your door picture....this way you will get the look you want.

I would ask at the local feed mill to see if anyone knows of a blacksmith; have him create an original knocker to add to your fabulous door that your husband built. You would have more in- put that way. I agree with the others who commented on the size, it needs to be a vertical, dramatic piece. Hope you post a pic of it after all is said & done.
  • Debbie Stanley Debbie Stanley on Jun 29, 2013
Even though I love the idea of a speak easy; it might compromise the integrity of the door. I would just find a unique knocker that compliments the door and go with that. Good luck!

When I first read your previous post about your husband redoing the front door, I just love what he did and I have to admit that I thought that the door needed a knocker but I have since changed my mind. Please leave it as it is. Why mess with Perfection? It is gorgeous as it is!

I agree with the people who say leave the door alone. If you want something that will let you know someone's at the door, how about a bell pull, or a door bell? If you want to see who it is at the door, I recommend a small, unobtrusive camera placed so that you can see the face of the person at the door. A small viewing screen inside next to the door (perhaps in a box that matches your beautiful door) would show you what you need to see.

Have to concur, a door knocker would be the best for your door, without taking away from its beauty. I would ask your husband too...he did make the core contribution. lol have fun with your journey.

I really can't see why it's one or the other. I have a speak easy with a very functional knocker that is built into it that swings from the bottom with a separate striker plate. I love the way it speaks to your visitor as to it's purpose to alert me of there presents. I also like the power that the door and window give me the choice of opening the door or simply communicating without opening the door or removing the deadbolt. You have a beautiful door, and entry way that can only be made more interesting with such an upgrade and also add to it's safety if installed correctly. Have fun picking a good one out. I would suggest one with an arch top to go with your door. Brass is also a nice touch...
  • I'd love to see your door @Corky Harper it sounds wonderful! And I'd never considered actually using the speakeasy! My pups bark like CRAZY when someone comes to the door so if I could leave it closed and peek out of the speakeasy that would be helpful!!! thx so much for your input!
  • Thanks so much everyone!!! I can't believe how helpful all of you have been,we decided to leave the door just as it is and call it finished :) Now of course we've moved on to the next project :) thank you again every single one of you! xo

Such a beautiful door! I would do both but I would arch the speakeasy to match the door.

Hey ! Go all the way ! Speakeasy, door knocker, door bell, cow bell, peep hole, ceiling fan, wind chimes, intercom system, video cameras (2 angles), doggie door, motion detector alarm, bug lights, flood lights, and a 1950's air raid horn. May be a but busy - but all are good additions. Choose wisely; choose what you like.

I don't thinks so, but maybe you should instead hang a wreath on your door. Gorgeous door by the way!
