To frame or not to frame canvas
I made a chandelier art piece on an 11x 14 canvas. It has a French typography background and has been distressed / "grunged" with dark wax. Then the chandelier was hand painted using stain. This canvas piece is not a deep canvas, only about 1/2", maybe 3/4". Is it better to frame this sort of art or leave as is? The typography does go along the sides. I also have a thing burlap canvas art piece that I DO think I will have to frame., which is the "Live EVERY day with intention". The other LIVE canvas is a 2" with embellished sides, so i know it does not need any framing. Any tips on how to frame canvas art would be appreciated if you think this is the way I should go. Thanks for any input! Michelle M&M Embellishments

KatAych on Mar 05, 2016I think it looks good either way!!! I can see leaving it as is, but I can also see framing it out in a wide black or silver frame and it looking equally excellent!Helpful Reply

Meg Jorgensen-Cole on Mar 05, 2016I think it looks great as is, but if you did decide to frame it, I would matte it. I think a matte would cover less of your work.. And dark, definitely, dark frame and dark matte. Matting and framing it could make it a much larger piece that could hang in a larger space. That's my opinion :) It's a beautiful piece of art. Well done.Helpful Reply

Maristella Ibarra on Mar 05, 2016As it is, looks beautiful, nice work !! however, the place where it will be located might indicate you how to proceed. Is this going to be indoors, but the place gets easily dirty? Then you might want to protect it. You might use a no shine glass to keep the sense of the art. The surroundings also have a saying, for a more contemporary look, no frame could be your best option.Helpful Reply

Suzy on Mar 06, 2016Geez, leave it just like it is. A frame will only detract from the simplicity of the piece.Helpful Reply

Lisa on Mar 07, 2016Don't frame bordering art. It is partially framed by the art itself. If you frame, it takes away from the piece. I, myself have many unframed canvas pieces.Helpful Reply

Duv310660 on Mar 07, 2016When you frame a canvas with an ornate frame, it pays homage to a more romantic style of decor. When a piece is framed with a sleeker, narrow, uni-width of frame, it becomes reminiscent of mid-century, modern decor. When you leave a canvas unframed, you are making more of a statement about the process of art-making itself. Depending on the mood of your decor, whether steeped in classic or modern design, or an ecletic mix, the question 'to frame or not to frame' is answered.Helpful Reply

Susan Rutter on Mar 09, 2016I do oil paintings and I would get the advice from them which color frame to choose. WITH YOUR PHOTOS I WOULD NOT FRAME THEM -- THEY LOOK WONDERFUL AS THEY ARE -- Framing would take away from your canvas.Helpful Reply
