You can make a box that is open on one side and sits on the floor. Then sit items on top for decor.
When we had one, I used velcro to pull my drapes up and fasten temporarily and then when it wasn't in use, just dropped the drapes to full length. I had the black out kind so you couldn't see the unit and it didn't stick out enough to notice.

Hello! I use large art to cover things like my fusebox control pane. Perhaps this might be an option for you? Very often at thrift stores or consignment shops you can find a great piece of framed art for very little cost. Alternatively you can up style to using the frame and replacing something you prefer inside the cost effective frame.
