If you can't have a headboard for some reason, you could always paint a headboard on the wall. Have you ever been to a hotel where they anchor an upholstered panel to the wall instead of a headboard? These are just a couple of ideas. I have seen people use shutters, pallet wood planks, old doors etc.. You might want to check out this page of Hometalk diy beds:

Depending on your style, you can decorate above the bed on the wall. Monogram or some type of vinyl sign, a large painting or mirror, if you like farmhouse one of the cathedral decor items, the ideas are endless. I don't have a headboard in 3 of our bedrooms and have the wall above decorated instead.
Fabric, doors, wallpaper, painted rectangles. There are tons of options.
