I like to have the rod extend a least a couple inches on each side of the window frame. Personally like double rods since I can hang a sheer underneath with curtains or drapes on top.
Hi,
The standard size is 96" for a patio door, BUT the curtain rod should be wider so it depends on what you have on each side. You want it to at least at least be wide enough to cover the molding on each side. It should also be attached to studs. There should be studs on each side of the door. measure your door, and add a couple inches :)
I believe that is 5 feet. Measure from side to side.
Measure your door, and add 6" for the drapes when they are open, to store when the door is open. It is so important to have this extra room. J.
