Yes, you just have to prep it properly. I would give it a light sanding first. Then use a good primer - Zinnser makes a few, then paint in the choice of your color.
Make sure the paneling is clean and dry. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123 or BIN. Then paint like painting regular walls. If the paneling has grooves you can fill them with non shrink drywall patching compound. Just put on enough to fill the grooves. Let it dry overnight. Next day use a damp sponge to smooth the patch. Then prime and paint.
Charlene i painted over the faux wood paneling in my last house, i painted it a light taupe color it looked soo much better! Didnt prime or anything, hope this helped
Hi Charlene! When I painted mine, I washed and dusted it first. Then I lightly sanded it, to scuff the finish. I filled the grooves with spackle and sanded it smooth. Then I painted a coat of Kilz latex. After, it had dried, I painted the wall. I was using a light cream color for the paint, but, so the white Kilz was fine. You can also ask for it to be tinted to the color you're going to paint. Home Depot always offers to do it when I buy my paint there.
