A light sanding knocks down the sheen and any imperfections in the finish leaving behind a surface that your primer and paint will better adhere to. How old is the trim finish? If it is from the 70s or earlier it could contain lead.
Use caution!
A wipe down with a developer like Peso is a good option to sanding if the finish has any lead in it.
