You probably shouldn't, is the short answer. Wallpaper can be difficult to remove, but the risk of having it fall down after hanging it over old wallpaper isn't worth it.

If you really can't remove the old paper, buy some wall 'sizing' and apply that over it before putting on the new paper, but exhaust all your other removal options first. Good luck!

The best thing to do would be to take the old wallpaper off before you put up new wallpaper. I know it's not a fun job.

Melanie Hi,. Don't do it. The old wall paper will eventually peel away from the wall. This project should start from scratch. Take the paper off and wash the glue off the walls. Let dry completely, then put your paper on. Also the seams will be very noticeable because they'll either be on top of one another, or you'll have seams everywhere. Aloha!

The existing paper has to be in good shape. Use separate wp glue.

Ive had more luck painting over it.

You have to make sure it is not loose at any area. If it is, then it will come down. I had one room that I think the wallpaper was cemented on (LOL) and I just wallpapered straight over it.

Unless the wallpaper is in really good shape, you'll want to take the old wallpaper down first.

I agree that you should remove the existing. Here's a tip for easier removal: 50/50 mixture of warm water & fabric softener will loosen the glue and you can scrape off with a stiff plastic spatula. I've done 5 rooms with this and it is superior to anything I've tried up to this point. I've read you can use vinegar instead of fabric softener but I have no experience with that. Also, it smells so good when you are finished!
