Give shoes to needy
If you had the wall space a shallow but high enough to enclose a hanging metal shoe rack; wooden unit; might be the solution. The rack holds a number of pairs, in an organized way, easy to find what you are looking for, the cabinet itself would have a low profile and it would be easy to construct. Something like the cabinet to the left in this photograph is what I mean.
