I think just painting them would be a huge update, white to brighten up the space. They also make gel stain that goes on easier than standard stain to give it more of a dark, java wood look that looks more modern and updated.

Hey Donna, what you have is pretty simple and clean, if you'd like to add some more character to your hand rail you can get some oak trim and layer it on-top of your existing railing. Chairrail and baseboards might be a good place to start!
Another thing to consider. According the the CDC, FTC, and local codes the distance between the baluster should be no more than five inches.
