Seeking options for updating dated railings I in homes like mine..

as a realtor, selling homes built in the 70s and early 80s with railings that make the home feel dated.. looking for some budget conscious options for updating them.
Oak railings in need of a new look.

    I think just painting them would be a huge update, white to brighten up the space. They also make gel stain that goes on easier than standard stain to give it more of a dark, java wood look that looks more modern and updated.

    Paint white, change up the ballister to something thicker, add a few more railings in an offset pattern

    Leave it alone. Part of the selling point of these older homes is the fact that the buyer can come in and redo it to his/her taste.

    Hey Donna, what you have is pretty simple and clean, if you'd like to add some more character to your hand rail you can get some oak trim and layer it on-top of your existing railing. Chairrail and baseboards might be a good place to start!

    Another thing to consider. According the the CDC, FTC, and local codes the distance between the baluster should be no more than five inches.
