Can a soft fiberboard ceiling be painted?

The fiberboard on the ceiling is similar to homasote and I want to know if it can be painted?

Yes. I would prime it first. It will suck up paint.
Hi Carol, yes you can and as Ken said you will need to prime first. This handy tutorial will help you choose the right primer for the job

Yes. I painted mine since they were old and at the time I could not afford a new ceiling. You can also use wallpaper on them. When a corner of my kitchen got a leak from above. I took the stained few tiles, added pre-pasted wallpaper to within 1" from the edge and swapped out the ones in the center of the room so it was a perfect square (or rectangle) in the middle of the room and it looked like it belonged there. Super easy to do.
Hi Carol, yes you sure can paint it! Hope this helps you out, https://inspectapedia.com/interiors/Fiberboard-Panel-Repair.php#:~:text=How%20to%20Paint%20Fiberboard%20Panels,that's%20already%20on%20the%20surface.
