I once painted my ugly (and very warn) vinyl floor with garage floor paint, stenciled it with a brick pattern and then sealed it with polyurethane. It looked amazing and held up great (three kids, three dogs, lots of traffic). If brick isn't your thing, you could probably find a nice stencil , or even just paint checkerboard squares. Only limit is your imagination! Have fun!
I painted vinyl floors of my store. They were 12x12 white tiles, I painted them with a rust colored paint and outlined each tile with A walnut stain and they look like real Saltillo tile. I sealed them with gym floor polyurethane. This was back in 1998, they are still holding up. My paint product was Behr.
