The concrete beneath your carpet can be stained or even painted. Word of warning though, the entire concrete area may not look as nice as the spot you just looked at. You will need to fill the holes left by the tackless strip where your carpet was stretch to immediately next to the room's walls. Here's a youtube video....ignore the annoying music if you can :) LOL
As long as you are happy with the result there is nothing says you cannot remove carpeting and paint or stain concrete.
