To measure the stairs take the width of the stair (example: 36in) plus the tread measurement top to bottom (example: 7in +11 in), then ( (36x18) divide by 12) times number of stairs = sq ft of stairs
for a room (width X length ) round to next highs ft then multiply to get sq ft needed for a room
I would take the linoleum off, sand down the risers and stain. No more dealing with linoleum. Or instead of staining you can put ceramic tiles on the risers.
Instead of replacing the sheet linoleum with more sheet linoleum/vinyl, why not use vinyl "tile" that is made for stairs? If the risers on your stair are in good condition you could cut costs by painting them with a semi-gloss, and install the treads only.
