Hi Carol, this is one decor idea that I never understood. What a mess when food spills. Try in a corner and pull. Ventilation, wearing protective clothing and a good respirator, you can use a heavy duty remover to get up the mastic. The big box stores do sell them. It may be a special order product. Or go to a marine shop to purchase. The tile probably is bad underneath so that too will need to be removed or covered. If it's linoleum, I'd suggest covering with ceramic tile. Good luck.

I’d start by borrowing a long-handled ice scraper to save my knees and back. Try to remove as much of the carpet as you can.

Perhaps use a a good box cutter to cut the carpet as best you can into strips.

But read this first, and wear gloves, a mask and safety glasses because old carpets are routinely disgusting no matter how clean your house is.
