How do I paint a wood floor in two or more colors?

Here is what my dilemma. For 8 yrs I have painted every year a floor glossy black oil base. I then put a clear coat. It turns out beautiful but with in six months the starts to lose it’s luster and quickly become an everyday job to sweep and shine. The floor just shows dirt too much. I know bad in the first place. I would like to add maybe some white with the black to create a marbled look or something easier to hide a little dirt. I’m know interior design person. Just the opposite. Any ideas and instructions on how to do the marble look?? Thanks so much. Kevin

Hello Kevin! Maybe you might consider using some floor stencils to add a pattern to your black floor. The stencils come in many different patterns. You might find one that appeals to you! You may have to do a bit of sanding to your floor as it is now to dull down the clear coat, then prime, then paint with your base color, then stencil with your second color, and finally then do a clear coat.

I used a special roller to achieve the marble look on my walls a few years ago. There are many versions of textured rollers so you might want to do some searching for one of those in a patter you like. It will make the job much easier.

What kind of paint are you using? Hope its Floor & Porch paint which holds up better to foot traffic. Why not just add another clear coat at 6 mos if your wear and tear is so hard on the floor?
First of all you should never add a clear top coat to gloss oil based paint. It's already the hardest finish. I suspect it's the top coat losing its lustre that's causing your problems. Clear top coats are usually softer and more susceptible to scratches. Just only use the high gloss paint next time. Good luck.
