You can either remove the spindles or cut the carpet with a sharp knife for cutting carpet.

Hello Amy! Usually the carpet is placed around the spindles not under the spindles. It may have been so well done that it just looks like the carpet is under the spindles. You should be able to get the carpet loose from the stairs and just pull it way from the spindles. It would be kind of crazy to have it under the spindles but strange things happen!

Amy: I would concur with both of the above answers! Give it a shot!

I have never heard of carpet being put under spindles, just cut around them, they must have done a good job of installation to make it look that way. None the less, you could remove a spindle to see what is going on.

Hi! When I have removed carpet from around stair spindles it was snug around the spindle and then stapled in place. Invest in a sturdy staple puller or two, and it will give you better leverage for removing them. I've used screwdrivers etc. but a staple puller with a good handle will make your life much easier. Good luck and stay safe!

Usually the carpet is wrapped snuggly around the spindles with a few staples holding it in place.

Slide a piece of something thin yet sturdy like 1/4" ply, plexiglass or metal sheeting under the edge of the carpet. It will save you from gouging the wooden on the stair when you use a screwdriver, putty knife or utility knife. Put it flat on the wooden tread, then use the prying tool between it and the carpet our you can use a utility knife to cut and lift until you see the staples or tacks without damaging your wood.
