  • You'll need to hire an electrician. Electric can be tricky if you don't know what you're doing. And if you want to have a ceiling fan, you'll need to make sure that whatever is installed, can handle the weight.

Definitely hire an electrician. This will involve running wires and installing a heavy duty brace. Not a DIY job.

As an electrician myself Patti, I can tell you: This is not ever a One man job unless the Electrician wants a bad time.

Trust me, he will bring a helper.

If he doesn't, send him home and find someone else.

I have installed my own ceiling fan... if I had three hands it would have been MUCH easier! ...Now I hire a professional who can do it quickly and nicely

This can be done, but as others have noted, it is a big job. Installing new electrical wiring from the nearest junction box to the ceiling location you want the fan attached to requires accessing the ceiling attic space. Separate wires will have to run to a wall outlet as well, to turn the fan on/off. This procedure is often referred to as 'fishing' the wires.

This is usually unpleasant task as it involves crawling around in a hot, dirty, dark cramped space, becoming covered with insulation. Once the electrical connections are in place, they should last almost forever, but there is the reason why electricians will charge for labour to do so.
