Start by pulling up the carpet at a corner then just keep tugging and pulling. Roll up and remove. There is a long handled scraper for removing the glue, just keep scraping until all is removed. It’s not easy but is such an improvement to have the old carpet out.
Heat gun and scraper for the stubborn stuff that you can't get up after the initial scraping.
If you are going to replace the old carpet you just have to get the old glue down to a rough sandpaper like texture. Sometimes it is almost impossible to get all the old glue off down to the wood. You can sand but wear a mask as it gets very very dusty and you don't want all that dust up your nose!
